There is no "one size fits all" option when it comes to auto insurance. Full coverage means many different things to many different people. You may be required to carry certain coverages due to a lease or finance agreement or you may have assets that need to be protected. Understanding what your coverages mean, is the first step to ensuring you are properly protected.
Bodily Injury Liability
Covers injuries to others when you cause an accident. BI is usually sold with a per person limit and a per accident aggregate (i.e. $100,000/$300,000).
Property Damage Liability
Pays for damages to the property of others when you cause an accident. This can include other vehicles as well as property such as fences and buildings. In the state of Florida you are required to carry at least $10,000 of Property Damage Liability.
Personal Injury Protection
The State of Florida is a No-Fault state. This means that if you are injured in an accident, your medical bills are paid by your own policy, up to $10,000, regardless of who is at fault. PIP is a required coverage in Florida.
Provides coverage under your own policy when you are injured in an accident by another party that either doesn’t have Bodily Injury coverage or has insufficient coverage. UM does not cover property damage.
Helps to pay medical bills for you or your passengers when you are injured in an accident.
When your car is damaged in an accident, Collision coverage pays to repair your vehicle. Claims for totaled vehicles are usually paid at the actual cash value of the vehicle prior to the loss but Replacement Cost may be an option when you purchase your policy.
Provides coverage for damage to your vehicle for most perils, other than collision. This includes things such as fire, theft, vandalism and hail. Coverage is subject to a deductible typically in the $250-$1,000 range.
Helps pay for a rental vehicle while your car is being repaired after an accident. Coverage is usually provided for up to 30 days with a daily maximum benefit ranging between $30 - $50.
Towing & Labor
An optional coverage to provide towing and/or labor when your car breaks down. This can be useful in for situations like flat tires or dead batteries.
